iPod 3rd gen doesn't work with other devices

Just replaced the battery in my 3rd generation IPOD and connected it to a car tuner from belkin. It pauses itself after each song. Then I plugged into my panasonic Blu-Ray player with IPOD doc and it wouldn't even recognize it as an IPOD. It works perfectly, it just doesn't understand other devices with the new techology inbedded into the firmware of newer IPODS. My new nano works perfectly with these same devices. CAN I FLASH MY OLD IPOD TO MAKE IT WORK WITH NEW DEVICES?
