Hi Gayle,

if you double tap the home button you'll get a pop up menu across the bottom of the screen. then scroll the menu to the right till you find the left-hand icon in the photo. Pressing it will either lock or unlock the auto rotate function. It will be symbolised by a padlock. In the photo the auto rotate is locked

It is amazing how I forgot how to lock and unlock the screen rotation from iOS 6.
