iPod won't turn on and is getting hot when plugged into power?

History

When the problem first started my Ipod said "connect to power". When I connected to power nothing happened. I tried two different cords, then I plugged into my computer. After a few minuted the whole Ipod got really hot and smelled burnt. I've only had it 2 years and it was in perfect condition. Never gotten wet or been dropped, it looks brand new. Any ideas on what has happened or how to fix it?

First thing that comes to my mind is that your battery needs to be replaced. you can check on here Installing iPod Nano 4th Generation Battery Replacement and see if you can do it. Once you have it disassembled, you do want to check for any further damage, but start thinking battery first.
