How do I test my battery to see if it needs replacing?

While my iphone is still working, how do I know when the best time is to replace the battery, and if I'm replacing it too soon?

When i asked an Apple store a while back, when the phone was over a year old, they connected it to a Macbook and ran a program to test it and said 'the battery is still fine, the phone's all working OK'.

However, I didn't see what program they used, and I'm a long way from an Apple store to ask again. I was wondering what program they used and if there's a PC equivalent. That would be a simple answer.

But my phone has now taken to occasionally switching off when it it's still got 10%-25% of charge left. I'll assume it's the battery.

It sounds like an old battery...I'd swap it. You've come here because it's obviously an issue for you, so maybe the time has come. AFAIK there is no freely available program..it'd make all of our lives easier!

Until it dies, it is a personal decision. My criteria is, if it really bothers me it is time to replace the battery. That is when I cannot get away with a simple charge at night.

Watch for the signs of a depleting battery, like long charging times, shortened functioning and an overall "weirdness", like turning off and on weird error codes on syncing etc can all be a sign of a bad battery.
