What size engine is it and what type of transmission is it? Do you have the service engine light on? Have you tried to take it and get it checked on an engine analyzer?

Take it in to an Auto Zone and get a free computer diagnostic, then fix what it tells you is wrong.

Auto Zone will only do the diagnostics if your Check Engine Light is on.

This may be a little late, but my 626 used to have a very rough idle, and would sometimes shut off from it. It ended up being a manifold gasket was broken which caused a vacuum leak. I had a '98 626 LX with the 2.0L IL4 engine and the 5-speed manual transmission.

Hi,

if the car shakes alot it´s most common not a problem of the idle, it´s a hint that you should take a closer look at your engine because there is something wrong with the air-fuel mix, or the ignition.

The idle was set before to a proper rpm. As long as the carburator or the throttle body wasn´t changed, the idle shouldn´t change.

I would take a closer look to the ignition system, a.e. spark-plugs, cables, rotator a.s.o., the fuel system, a.e. carburator or injection, filters, fuel lines, fuel pumps, injection black-box and at last at the air intake, sometimes its just a messed air filter.

I have a 98 Mazda 626 lx 2.0 L 4 manual 5 speed tranny started hiccuping about two weeks ago. At first it was mild than it got worse and almost constant . I pulled the thermostat and it appeared to be stuck shut. Car than ran fairly good for a few days with very minor hiccups but didn't last long. Car started hiccuping really bad yesterday , tach gauge goes crazy when it has these hiccups, than car stalled while driving and wouldn't restart this time. Does anyone has any answers of where to start first? Didn't have these issues until I replaced the clutch a lil over a month ago.

I had a similar experience and several attempts of DIY I got it solve. I had changed:

Fuel pumps (from low pressure to higher)

Spark plugs & wire

Sprayed carburetor cleaner through the intake to clean throthle body

Etc etc

I finally decided to change the FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR and my problems went away.

Now it starts at first crank effortlessly. And drove well.
