Why is date and time being reset to the year 2040?

History

After replacing the sound card and power card in my Pismo it keeps resetting date and time to the year 2040 each time I boot up after having disconnected it from a power source. I have a brand new PRAM battery in the machine and was having no issues with date and time before I replaced the sound and power card. I've tried resetting the power management unit and the PRAM, but it hasn't helped. I forgot to disconnect the PRAM battery while I was replacing the sound and power card, so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it? I'm using Mac OS 9.2.2.

Lets use two steps on this. First disconnect the pram battery and shut the computer down completely and restart. What do you see as a date? If its the same as before you may have damaged the power card. If it resets to an earlier year there may be a defect in the battery. If the work with the pram battery doesn't show you the problem step two is to tear down the computer again and recheck all your connections. In case you did not use them I am including a link to the disassembly guides for your computer. Good luck.

Thanks for your help. When I restart the computer without the PRAM battery connected, the date is reset to 1/1/1904. Does that mean I might have short-circuited the PRAM battery by not disconnecting it while I took out the sound card and power card? Because the PRAM battery seemed to be working completely fine before I did that.

Petter,

Two possibilities--you have either damaged the battery (unlikely) or the card by not removing the battery. The least expensive and easy check would be to try a new battery. If all is well you are lucky--if not you have a bad card and should try the least expensive and easiest to replace first. Make sure all power is off before you replace anything. You could of course just use the computer without the pram battery and either re-enter the time each time you boot or if you are connected to the net just set the time to set automatically. Good luck.

rj713,

Okay. Makes sense. Thanks for your help.

PRAM battery is dead

Follow this to change the battery(this one keeps the date and time, and if you are not careful or change it ASAP, it may even damage something!)
