Why won't my console play nes games?

I took a perfectly good-working cartridge, and the screen is just black when I turn on my console. Also, when the console is turned on, a static/buzzing sound is heard.

Okay so you have a black/blank screen with a buzzing sound at all times, regardless of which cartridge you insert? What have you tried so far to fix it? Did anything happen to the console or did it just start to all of a sudden fail? Does the power light come on?

Are you using A/V cables or an RF switch? Is the console plugged into the television directly or through another source (VCR, DVD player, etc)? What accessories do you have plugged into it?
