Sound For A Minute Then It Fades Out

History

When I first turn on my iPod I get a severe buzzing sound out of the headphones and the music is very difficult to make out. Then within a minute or two when the unit warms up, both the buzzing and the music slowly fades away until the unit makes no sound at all. The same thing happens when I connect the unit to a docking station.

Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

Have you dropped it or damaged it recently?

rab - I purchased the unit "as is" with the intent of fixing it up - was advertised as just needing a new headphone jack - but I suspect that was incorrect. Any ideas ? Thnx.

Need to do some diagnostics. Put it in the refrigerator for an hour then plug it back in and tell me the results.

Mayer - You are really good. I left the iPod in the fridge overnight and when I played it this morning it worked fine (no static) for about 1 minute, and then the static kicked in (I guess as the unit warmed up). What next ?

This is indicative of a bad solder connection on the board. As the unit heats up, the connection breaks, and when the unit gets cold, the connection is better. This is a repair for an experience technician. Apple is aware of this problem and, if lucky, you can talk to the right people at their 1-800 customer service number to get it replaced under a "warranty exception". The old number I remember is 1-800-SOS APPLE. If this fixes your problem please hit the accept button located to the upper right of your original question. I've included a picture of it being fixed.

Somehow my original post on this question and his response were deleted. I had him put it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. When he tried it later the problem was gone but then returned in about a minute. I explained about the motherboard solder connections.

Hi,

when the sound fades on the headphone jack and the dock connector, i would suggest that the logic board is damaged.

You can open the iPod an disconnect the headphone jack, if the sound fades as well, its quite clear that the logic board is damaged.

Try connecting it to a dock that can play music from (iHome, Apple Universal Dock, Ect.) And see if the music is still messed up. If it isn't, then the headphone jack/hold switch assembly is probably bad.
