What happens if the copper tape is ripped?

I was taking apart my nieces Ipod touch 4th cause she busted the screen on it. On one section of the instructions it shows how to get that metal plate out and it says not to break the copper tape what happens if you did. Cause I think I am going to go ahead and buy her a new one and later on fix that one up if the copper is no big deal.

I have fixed a lot of 4g Touches and once ripped the copper adhesive. I think this is mostly for heat reduction as it spreads heat from the logic board to the big mid plane. This specific Touch works great still but I would suspect that the Touch could get hotter than with the copper attached.

Hi, sharing my latest investigation on this. The copper tape has a function as an EMI shield, meaning it helps isolate signals away from the WIFI antenna. I would try to patch it together as good as you can. Maybe take off the part on the mid plane and move it so that you can stick part of it to the part on the camera shield. True, the Touch 4g works without the copper tape but it has a function and putting it back together as good as you can ensures you have done what is possible to get a good WIFI signal. I remember moving the part from the mid plane up and tucking the extruding part under the copper tape on the camera shield.

Just go to you general electronics store or hardware store they have copper tape, or search online and you can just apply that, should be pretty obvious what the copper tape was for asle... It works in conjunction as an EMI shield and heat sink to REDUCE the heat and transfer to the tape to prevent the battery or anything fro. over heating. And Kalp, that's also probably why your ipod keeps going into restore due to over heat you may have fried something...

Copper tape isn't cheap... But will come in handy for projects...
