Hi, We need to know several things to help you. What are the last three characters of your serial number? What size hard drive did you install? How much memory did you install? Which version of OS 10 are you trying to install? When we know these things we will be in a better position to help you.

If you have another Mac with firewire you could also try to boot your new iBook G3 from the other Mac. This would eliminate any question of the optical drive being defective or incompatible OS disc. Boot the other, non intel machine into target disc mode by restarting and holding the T key. Then connect your ibook to it by firewire cable and power it up. It should find the other computer as a hard drive and allow you to boot from it.

If booting from another Mac does not show the new HD could you have a either a bad connector or logic board.

If you're using a gray disk to try and install that could be the issue... or you bought this iBook with a faulty ODD also. Do you happen to have another optical drive you could try instead, such as an external one?

If you're trying to install anything higher than Mac OS X 10.4 (ie 10.5, 10.6, or 10.7) it wont take it. Anything higher than 10.4 requires an Intel processor and the G3 has a PowerPC processor.

You can run 10.5 on a G4 PPC computer. I am currently running it on my G4 Mini and my G5 Powermac. Agreed 10.6 or higher need an Intel processor.
