Available HD Space Shows Discrepency Figures

History

Loading the new 500GB HD went smooth. My transfer data was little over 200GB, but then it showed that the HD was now over 400GB full. It some how doubled in size. When I look at each individual areas and add them up, they only indicate 200 GB.

I don't know what to make of it and how to correct it. There should be 300GB available not just 100GB?

Thanks,

Bryan

I'm assuming that you're talking about a Mac. Do you have filevault enabled? If so, shut down the computer. FileVault should offer to free up space in your home folder. Select "Yes" and let it procede to do so. FileVault caches most data that it copied to your hard drive, and it most likely cached the data from the drive in the process. Letting it "Free Up Space in Your Home Folder" will delete that cache.

Hi Chris, Thank you for your assistance. Yes my computer is a Macbook Pro. The FileVault has not been "turned on" and when I tried to turn it on, it asked that I needed an extra 100GB which my HD didn't have, so it didn't proceed with the process. I am having a feeling this may not be the cause. I feel some how when I was reinstating my data from my back up external HD to the new internal one some how it got duplicated. The funny thing is that I can't find duplicate files. Bryan
