Carl Herms, you might want to start with a new battery first. It is available here iPod Video 30 GB Battery and here are the instructions iPod 5th Generation (Video) Battery Replacement As for your songs skipping, that is more of a software issue, probably related to itunes settings but can also be cause by a Hard drive going bad. You might first try and see if the songs play okay in itunes. Then you can right click the song in your itunes library, and go to the 'Create AAC Version'. Good Luck and let us know.
