I believe that this is caused by a little plastic hook that holds the in-built flash is broken. If you do a Google search, you will find that this is a very common error. There is an interesting write up about the repair of one of those on a D90 which is essentially the same flash unit. Just in case you do not have it here is the service manual for that camera.
