This is one fragile piece of electronics. I don't think the cable breaks by itself so I suspect it to be software. I only speak of myself because I have put together again a 4g Touch and it was totally unresponsive. After a week I plugged it in and everything worked again (!) Wish I could tell you why! I would try a full software restore anyway. Let us know if that helps.

I have the same issue. The volume buttons work but the power sleep/wake button isn't working. The cable looks fine no solder points are broken and the cable isn't ripped.

Did you check that you did not damage the sleep/wake button when taking off the mid plane? Doe the volume buttons work? It is the same cable. the 4g Touch is extremely sensitive in that area and the first time I opened a 4g Touch I tore that cable because it sticks to the mid plane. You see it here soldered to the mainboard: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/6dqSF...

Whats that white stuff it looks like some glu or somthing on top of the Soldered part but besides that it look fine nothing seems riped

by

The white stuff is just some insulate goo. If your cable and connection looks fine I am not sure. The home button works fine? Have you tried to restore from iTunes?

maybe touch the top two connections on that cable where its soldered to the mainboard with a soldering gun. Maybe there is a cold weld there.

fyi...the top two connections are the power button and the bottom two are the volume control

I agree with teamneon. Worth a try. But I tried that for one Touch 4g and it did not help. In fact I used contact spray directly into the volume button. For this specific case it in fact solved the stuck up-button.

My sleep/wake button stopped working as well. I did bump the cable right at the bottom of the battery when I was working on it, but it didn't look like it was damaged. Volume buttons work, but my camera is a bit wonky as well. It fires up well, and then the next ten times I get a blank dark screen. Then the next 5 times it works. I'm sure not taking it apart again. The first screen I ordered was a dud off of eBay, that cost $30. The digitizer cable was too fragile, and cracked. I got a better one for $70, and it worked right away. I just have the Auto-Lock set for 1 minute, so it does go to sleep, or is at least inactive when the Wi-fi is off. That was a fun, but tough repair.

I just changed the digitizer and also had the same thing happen. I'm going to fully charge it and see if it corrects itself. Maybe I will perform a full restore and see if that helps. I pulled it apart and could not find anything wrong.
