it seems that there is some design flaw on the the new curved casing on the 4th gen. i've been reading thru different posts and this seems to be a recurring problem and needs to be addressed by apple. the board/clickwheel after a lot of use loosens up and creating some form of unstable contact, a solution i found is by adding a firm backing to it. i did this by inserting a piece of thin plastic (thin old credit card would do) between the board and the aluminum casing on the bottom end of the iPod. tried this with 2 of my iPods and it worked. of course you need to take the bottom plastic cover and the aluminum connector support with the 2 screws first. hope this work for you guys. GOODLUCK!

I have the same iPod, same problem, and used the Same fix which worked great for me!

Wabalooba,

I can't believe the credit card trick worked! My click wheel and select button were completely not working, and now...voile! Perfect fix! Thanks!

Brooke Holt,

I had the same problem with my Nano which I purchased at a pawn shop and didn't get around to using until after the 30 day return period expired so my fault. I found this form and again delayed with actually giving in a try, but finally decided today's the day. The first little piece of card was not thick enough though. I had to add another smaller piece behind the first piece and Yeah! It works.

Cheryl Cogley,

Hi All So where does the card go between?

Lee Coulton,

OMG. The credit card fix just worked for me!! Thank you so much. Go to YouTube for instructions on opening the case.

Try resetting your iPod by toggling the hold switch on and off and then holding down the menu button and the center button at the same time.

Had a problem with the iPod nano not turning off not pausing and the battery running down because of this. Used Brady Cabes answer of resetting iPod by toggling the hold switch and holding down the centre button and the menu button at the same time and this seemed to work so thank you thank you thank you for your help!

Harry Birchenough,

My click wheel stopped working as well. I followed Brady Cabe's advice and it WORKED!!! I thought my iPod Nano was dummed, a gonner and now we are back in business. Thank you Brady!! Heidi Herthel

Heidi,

"Try resetting your iPod by toggling the hold switch on and off and then holding down the menu button and the center button at the same time." I used this guys advice and it started working agin. It stopped working after we built and tried a solar USB charger. Now it is working again.

If restoring the iPod brings you to the "select language" screen, and you can still not get past that screen, even after toggling the hold switch numerous times, it might be that the clickwheel needs to be replaced. It is possible the motherboard is bad too though.

Have been dealing with this for years. Just reset it through iTunes back to original specs. Works every time. Why risk breaking it by jamming a credit card up it's innards?

Hi there, Just wanted to add some input to a similar problem that I had with my son's 4th Gen Ipod nano! I could reset it, but click wheel didn't work at all when I tried to do anything. I restored, tried the toggle trick, but to no avail! I then ordered a very cheap replacement wheel with flex cable from ebay for only $5.00 and when it came I followed a You Tube video on how to replace it. After replacing the wheel and crossing my fingers and toes, ahhh disappointment!!!! This did NOT fix the problem! SO, I read this forum and a few other and decided that maybe the credit card trick would work! What the $#&!, might as well try! WELL, wish I would have tried it first as it would of saved me the trouble of REPLACING the click wheel. All I would of had to do was take off the bottom of the ipod and insert a piece of a credit card under the wheel. (make sure you wedge it under the whole setup as to not disconnect the wheel or break something important)Slide the piece under the ipod cable jack at a slight angle to be sure you get it under everything so it is only pushing against the back of the ipod case and the wheel assembly! This worked so fast! Thanks for all the input from everyone and I hope you all find my post helpful as well!

Hi guys. You can add one more to the fellowship of the "thin credit card" solution and thank you fun4us so much for sharing this information with us. The click wheel in a 4th gen nano that I have wasn't working and after trying a few things(restoring, hard resetting, changing the click wheel and on) that didn't work I tried the idea of the "credit card" was worked for me.

panozoglou,

Ok so here is my input on how to fix this issue ......... Do use the piece of credit card because it really works I have tried everything as far as the reset, the restore and I even went as far as to buy a new click wheel and before I even got te new click wheel I stumbled upon this fourm or article and I was reading everything and thought to myself "yeah right this couldnt posibally work? how is the piece of card going to fit as apple has so tightly put this thing together" and low and behold it freakin worked so to save urself a headache try the card thing and if all else fails I have a click wheel I am going to be seling lol if you want to buy it u can email me @ dixon1428@gmail.com and we can work something out

Adam,

please explain this credit card method i dont get it!

Laura Uzamukunda,

The "thin credit card" solution was brilliant!!! Thank you, thank..... you, thank you! It feels so good not to have to deal with apple and the mountain of excuses that they give not to fix anything. Wow that feels great!!!

Thank goodness I found this via google! My daughter's 4th gen 8GB ipod Nano was barely a year old, she had barely ever used it and one day click wheel just quit responding, it would allow us to do the reset though. The hold button worked too, we tried the toggle thing, we tried reset on a flat surface repeatedly, we tried cleaning it gently with rubbing alcohol and rubbing the edge of a pill pack into the tiny crevices around the click wheel in case crud got in it or in case it got moist somehow, also putting it under a warm area and even in a bowl of rice, nothing worked. It would still play on the dock and it would still shuffle when shook and rotate images when turned and still register with itunes when plugged into the computer. But the menu was inaccessible, it would not scroll or click.

So we contacted apple online tech support and they made us do a restore, which wiped out much of her library (the stuff not bought through itunes) and then it was stuck on set language and so now it no longer worked on dock even and it could no longer be shuffled with shake it just stuck on set language screen and drained the battery. They told us since warranty had (conveniently) just expired, to just send it in for recycling and we could get 10% off new ipod at apple retail store (it is a 4 hr drive to the nearest one of those) or go to local store and just buy one as it would cost almost as much to send it in for repair. Ugh. I left it sit dead in a baggie in a drawer for several months whilst trying to figure out what to do.

I am a full time student and freelance artist = aka a poor person. This ipod was an extravagant gift from 'Santa' actually (really thanks to a large tax return that year). So, I could not replace it and just go get another one just like it, that is a LOT of money to me. And now that the newer versions are out (we do not want a touch shuffle that they now call the nano) it would cost over $200 to replace for exact same kind online, more than it cost in the first place!

I have always been good at fixing stuff around the house and working with tiny details in my art, so when I found this page, although I was a bit nervous at making it worse and not sure what I was doing and some of the tech speak had me nervous, I took to the task anyway thanks to feeling somewhat confident after browsing the guides about disassembly and assembly and reading a lot of the threads here.

Sure enough after lots of other troubleshooting, I had got it to where it clicked and scrolled for a bit and let us set things up but when I downloaded new songs it quit working again, at least now it was synced and back to playing on the dock and with earbuds with shake for shuffle, but still no menu, scroll, click or way to turn it off.

Finally, what worked was the credit card trick by fun4us above --- when I cut a tiny piece of an old gift card (about just under maybe 3/4" wide and maybe a bit over 1" long and I curved the edges so there would be no sharp corners) and I carefully held my breath and slowly at an angle wedged it into the back of the casing from the bottom of the ipod after taking off the metal plate on the bottom... and I tried the click wheel out, very skeptical... for a second or two it seemed to work on the sideways screen but not upright, but with a little tweaking of the piece of gift card being shoved further in and patience with scrolling and clicking 3 or 4 times, it worked perfectly again!

I cut the excess of the card off with my x-acto knife and carefully wedged it in far enough the aluminum plate would fit back in, put the screws back in their proper places with an old eyeglass repair phillips screw driver I had in my tool kit and put it on the wall charger for safe measure and it is good as new, probably better!

Thank you so much for this fix! My daughter is 14 now and so music is really important to her and she plans to use that thing 24/7, there is no way I could have replaced it on my small income. This site is awesome, you made me a "genius-hero-mom who can do anything", in her eyes!

Wow ... Wasted so much time to resolve this stuck on Language screen. Odd that the center and menu bottun worked but not the rest I just had to play with the bottom tab and got it to work! I didn't have to pull it out and do the credit trick! Thanks alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

novaunique,

Does anyone have a link or what I need to type in on youtube? I cannot find video to show me how to do this. Thanks!

Clare,

Someone Should make a video tutorial on how to fix this step by step. It would greatly help those of us who are "visual Learners". It would be greatly appreciated. == Update == whaaaa i just got it to work !!! thank you so much !!!

Awesome tip, guys! The click wheel on my nano 4th gen has been in zombie mode for more than a year. It's back alive after 30 minutes of minor fix.

I think it took me longer to find the little screwdivers than to actually fix it.

Thankx a bunch! :)

The credit card tricked worked for me too. Just tried this last night and it didn't do anything but I put it on the charger all night and in the morning, it was alive!!

Tip: don't bother disassembling the entire ipod (top and glass etc) - Only remove the bottom and charger part and shove the little piece of plastic up the back against the casing and logic board. Leave enough room for the little metal charger part to slip back in and replace the bottom cover. You will need a Phillips #00 screwdriver for the 3 screws at the bottom.

OMG IT WOKED! its as good as new :) You just made me really HAPPY, Thank you!!:D

Helpful tip: Make sure when your inserting the credit card in you put it underneath the part where you would plug in the charger to charge your Ipod.

Hope this helps for you:)

Another fixed ipod nano here using the card method! Just to clarify a bit more, you have to really force the card in the very back so that it pushes everything forward a bit more.

The girl I'm dating who's ipod has been unusable for years says thanks for the tips everyone!

Oh, and for some reason I had to also do a factory reset in itunes which also seemed to fix everything... I think it was because this ipod's software was corrupted too.
