Powers down during boot-up

Press power button. Computer chimes, presents the gray screen, the Apple logo, and the spinning circle for a few seconds before going to black screen-- turning itself off.

Machine is 5 year old A1174. HD is a little over a year old (WD 1TB). Other than the HD crash last year, no major problems.

Could be a failing power supply that's quitting after it heats up a little. Take the frame off and check out the diagnostic lights on the logic board before, during and after boot up and shut down. Let us know your results.

Okay, neophyte question: where are the LEDs I'm supposed to be looking at on the logic board?

by

To the right of the RAM. A couple of models didn't have them. Please give the last three letters of your serial number (found on the bottom of your stand) to help identify exactly which machine you have.

The last three characters are U2P, but the last three letters are GUP. I'm looking at the front side, but I'm thinking that they could be on the back side, which takes a whole lot more taking apart of the computer.

iFixit does not appear to have a teardown for your specific model that I can find. So I don't know if the LEDs are there or not.
