Just replaced the DC-In board, computer won't run off of batter?

History

What is going on with my computer! I just ordered a new DC-in board from the one and only www.ifixit.com and replaced it with your very skilled manuals. After the computer successfully started to charge, i let the computer sleep and charge over night and it got the battery clear up from zero to 79%! I used the computer next day, on my tour bus to try doing some recording in logic and it did just fine. The battery only got down to about 75%, and I turned it off. It was turned off for about two hours before we parked the bus and I got in my hotel. I plugged it in there, and it began to charge again. I noticed it had enough battery so I unplugged the AC adapter, and of course it died. I reset the PMU and it is now charging faster, (The battery is just fine, dc-in board is fine, ac adapter is relatively new), but still the computer dies when I unplug it, and the backup battery does not save time and date settings. Please help me! I have to start recording the next album soon.

The problem could be a possibility of things. The motherboard itself could be broken however, the battery itself could also be broken. Press the button located on the battery itself, see how many lights are lit (each light represents 25% of power). If it is lit, and your computer still won't recognize the battery, then i would think that the connector for the battery is not connected. I would first see the condition of your battery, boot your computer with the AC adapter hooked up, then hold option and click your battery menu icon at the top right. You batter condition should be shown.

If the computer is on, turn it off.

Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.

Wait 5 seconds.

Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

Next let's see the condition of your battery. Download and run Coconut Battery: http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutba...

Your logic board has a small capacitor that replaced the PRAM battery on this model. It keeps your date and time and will hold a charge for about twenty seconds when you remove your main battery. I am leaning toward a bad battery connector or battery connector to the logic board. Here's the part, check the exposed pins for corrosion and make sure the molex type plug is secure: iBook G4 14" Battery Connector

If you have a multimeter test the exposed pins for power. Please let us know he Coconut battery results and multimeter results and we can go from there.

Meanwhile, does anyone have a spare Mac they could send menus I pay for shipping? XD

adrianjustrocks,

I don't understand your request for "menus", what is that?

mayer,

a list of items you can order from mostly used in restaurants etc...:-) Sorry.

oldturkey03,

good one ;-} But I really don't have a clue what he's talking about

mayer,

Coming from you that is almost a compliment for the OP since you don't get stumped easy on the Mac business..

I had a similar problem as well, although I have a mac book pro. If you replace the motherboard that might solve all your problems (it did for me). However I the only quick fix I can come up with is using the power supply to power it.

Rather drastic recommendation right out of the box. You sound like an Apple Genius. How about trying to diagnose the problem first.

Well I pressed the button on the battery and all four lights were lit up. I will get coconut battery tomorrow and test the connector. I have already reset the pram and it made no difference. The internal battery doesn't hold my date and time ever either! Could the battery connector really have gone bad that fast? Quite depressing. I believe there are about 125 cycles in the battery.

The battery connector is in the computer not the battery. Check the link I gave.
