First try starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on start up. This may clear everything, if it boots. If so try booting the regular way. If it still fails to boot:

Insert your system installation disk and start up holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities -> Disk Utility. See if the drive shows up on the left hand side. If so then see if it can be repaired. First run the Repair till it runs clear and then repair your permissions. If it will not see the drive then you may need to reinstall the system. If that's the case, please give us the last three letters of your serial number so we can identify which MacBook you have. Please let us know you results before proceeding.

I know this by experience, many times. There are many ways to getting to the point where you can run a repair.

And you recommended the exact same thing I said. "First run the Repair till it runs clear and then repair your permissions."

Sounds like your OS got corrupted. Insert the OSX disc and run a repair. You may also boot to an external HDD with the disc image. This is what they would do at the Genius bar if you took it to the Apple store.

- "boot to an external HDD with the disc image" What disk image? What external HDD? Your reference to what they would do at a Genius Bar is supposition.
