Sega Saturn doesn't work

Hello there,

I bought a Saturn pre owned in Ebay for just 9 bucks.

There was no AV cable so I opened it and soldered in a RCA plug. The Problem is, I don't hear sound and see no Picture, allthough my TV gets a signal.

I used the right pinout and soldered everything correctly but the problem still appears. By the way, the CD Spins...

Anybody got an Idea?

What signal does your TV get from it? Do you have anything coming from your Saturn other than the CD spinning?

One of the issues here is that you probably don't know what is wrong with the console (if anything) since you got it of ebay unless the seller could tell you. Was it supposed to be working? I would of course double check your newly soldered connection. Not that I doubt that you do a great job, but it does pay off to double check ones word. You did say you have the correct pinout. Do you have the schematic for the Saturn? If you do, you are a huge step ahead. I would start with checking the output of the power supply. If my notepad serves me right, on the power supply are 5 pins that connect to the main board. 9 volts, 5 volts, 3 volts and 2 pins for ground. Check those and see if you have power to the whole console. Number one concern must be to get a display that is working. check the power supply fuse and take a look inside the PSU just to make sure that your caps are not leaking etc. Also check your boards for any burnt out components, I know that the Saturn has issues with Varistors and fuses. Go from there and see what it does. Let us know so we can continue to assist you.

hello! thanks for your answer!

first: I am using component video (yellow plug).

The Ebay guy told that the console is working (it boots) but he can't test it because he didnt had a A/V Cable.

I checked all connections three times. Unfortunatly i dont have the schematic of the saturn mainboard, but I have a schematic for the A/V Output. I used a multimeter to figure out, what pin in the 10 hole DIN plug leads to what pin on the motherboard. I used the Comp. Video pin and the common ground (shielding). I found a thread in a forum, a guy has exactly the same problem like me. They told him too, that the PSU may be blown up. I checked everything, no blown up capacitors or else. I will look if the PSU gives enough power... As I already said, the power LED is green, the disc spins and the busy LED for the disc is flashing untill he has initialized the disc, nothing more. Thank you very much for helping me, I will now check the PSU.

Bye

So right now I would think you are stuck until you get the display going so as to see if you get the Seg splash screen. Let us know how your PSU test out went

While I continue to check, just found this bookmark and you might get some more info there too. http://www.mygsmindia.com/vbb/software-h... You'll have to register but that may not be a bad thing:)

Sorry wrong diagram, belongs to the 68000

New Insights - I tested the PSU, 9 Volt delivers 9,10Volt, 5 Volt delivers 5,20Volt and 3 Volt delivers 3,45Volt O.o

Maybe its just the PSU... I hope so. I really do.

I checked on ebay yesterday and they are not expensive, I think it was in the single digits. At least its a start. Did you double check your video output? Sorry I keep harping on that....:-)
