http://www.llamma.com/ has excellent tutorial as well as how to guides for the XBox 360 optical drive laser repair, pot adjustment as well as multiple optical drive disassembly instructions. http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/

I used llama for xbox repair.. I know the guide to replace it is on ifixit too, but llama also provides more information than the troubleshooting page here. It also has error codes for xbox360 which were very helpful.

WOW! Thanks for all the helpfull tips! I will definitely check these resources and see if I can fix the DVD drive without buying a new one. The issue I have with my XBOX 360 is that it sometimes doesn't read my games, and pops the tray back out. Believe me, ALL of my XBOX games do not have any scratches, so I don’t think the issue is from the games at all.

that sounds like a great idea. A lot of times it may just be the laser or the alignment. Just take your time to repair it and do one step at the time. Good Luck to you.

Also, you must buy the same replacement drive that you have in your console (There are about 10 different drive revisions) When replacing the drive, you must take the old drive's controller board, and install it in the new drive, as Xbox 360 drives are "Married" to the motherboard that they came with.

Chris,

Your answer is partially correct. It's technically not necessary to swap the drive's controller board.

You can dump the firmware or key from the broken drive and then flash it onto the donor drive. You can do this even if the models are different. However, we won't know if Microsoft will decide to ban people from XBOX live if it detects a change in the OSIG (drive identification).

Murmador,

If your 360 drive isn't reading games, you don't need to swap the drive out completely. You can just swap the laser for a replacement unit.

Sometimes you have to replace the drive completely if the drive is physically damaged or worn beyond repair.
