cannot add or delete songs

At the moment I can only play music on my Ipod 2nd g shuffle. when it is connected to my PC I cannot add or delete any songs, it just says that the device is read only. I have tried it as mass storage and connected to I Tunes. Dont want to re-format it as there is a lot of songs on it.

Chris,

First off you should always back up your music and these devices really don't hold that much. You should start iTunes and connect the iPod. Does your iTunes recognize the shuffle? If so you need to be sure the current OS update is installed. If that doesn't work you will need to reset it. Both functions will wipe all of the songs you have on it but should resolve your issue.

chris try this for a temporary solution. When you plug in the ipod, open the device manager, disable the ipod under USB device controllers, and then enable it again. It should only take a second to updated itself. Of course you also want to follow Apples reset option http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1655 Good Luck and keep us informed so we can continue to assist you. Back up your ipod and your songs on iTunes...

Don't know if this is any help, but there is another way to edit your songs on the ipod. Use a prog called copy trans no need for itunes. Hope it helps. :)
