grinding sound from left side of computer

I have a macbook pro I purchased in 2006, and it just recently started making a horrible grinding noise. It sounds like something that is spinning, but I'm pretty sure its not the hard drive because that makes a different noise. Is my computer about to die? Any fixes for this problem?

There are a couple things that could make this grinding noise:

1. Your hard drive is failing. Are you able to boot into your computer normally? If you can, check

Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities), select your Mac's hard drive, and check the SMART status at the bottom of the window. If it is "verified", then it is OK, anything else means you need a new hard drive fast.

2. Check your fans. Sometimes, as fans get older, they start making horrible grinding noises. Download SMC Fan Control and run the fan speed up. Does the grinding noise get louder? If so, buy a Macbook Pro fan from eBay.

3. Is there a disc inside the disc drive? If there is no grinding sound when a disk is not inserted, swap out your drive with a new one.

Hope this helps!
