How to open the case on a WD My Book Essential?

There no apparent screws or fasteners, so I believe it is 'plastic snap' lock.

This drive has intermittent power problems and I believe 'something' is loose inside, or I will put the drive in another case (hopefully, at worst).

Regarding the power problem, sometimes when it fails, a light tap on the case makes it power back on.

not an answer but having the same problem and thinking to get the bare drive out of the case... brand new except for a bunch of my files that have gone missing on this P.O.S. - sticking with seagate from now on

Western Digital 1 TB My Book USB 2.0 External Hard Drive used it put important things on it stored it the way it should be stored, go back to gather stuff (yes its been awhile) but that should not matter, … and the %#*@ thing wont even turn on.. no light on it nothing, can’t get anything off it, computer will not show it as being connected, because there is NO power going to it, (hence why the light isn’t coming on) paid for this got VERY little use for it and will NEVER buy from WD again.. so not happy with this .. i have lost everything now. thanks WD

Have you tried removing the HD and using a SATA-to-USB adapter dock? The article in the link in the first reply to this post gives directions on that. I've found that adapter docks are great and cheaper in the long run because you can just buy HDs and use them in the same dock. Much cheaper than buying encased HDs.
