Make the Lombard Boot with an Un-Apple DVD Drive

Hello all! I've been in pursuit of a way to boot my Lombard PowerBook from a disc drive that it not supported by Apple. I wanted to install a SuperDrive in order to burn CDs and DVDs but, the older computers never supported third party devices like the PC laptop SuperDrive that I'm trying to use, so while it will work after the Lombard boots, it won't boot if the drive is in!

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the Lombard to boot while the drive is in? Thanks so much!
