Black Screen - How to Diagnose Problem?

History

Just bought an old PowerBook 3400c for next to nothing. Unit is in great shape but has black screen. Chime on startup, hard drive spins up after about a 10 second pause. How can I determine if this is a VRAM problem on the motherboard, or a cable or screen problem?

This model should have a VGA out port, so try connecting an external display, then powering up the system. You can also check for a failed backlight by shining a bright flashlight into areas of the LCD to see of the image is there, just not lit up.

David is correct in suggesting the OP try an external display. The Wallstreet guide is not correct however as the OP states his computer is a 3400c and has the PPC 603e CPU--not the G3. Ralph +
