How can I repair water damage?

History

My ipod was damaged by the rain (it was in my purse near an umbrella, and the water got into the case, thus soaking into the ipod). Not knowing what to do and thinking it would be okay, I wiped off the screen and powered on my ipod. To my surprise it worked, but the screen is unresponsive to any touch. Therefore I can't turn it off. I'm trying to dry it out with the rice method, but if the device is on (and CAN'T be turned off), what is the likelihood that this will actually be beneficial? What else can / should I do?

If it's still broken, you should try replacing the front panel / digitizer assembly (which contains the touch sensor).
