Lock Button Not Responsive

History

So a few days ago, the lock button on my friend's iPhone 3GS stopped responding. When pressed, it does nothing. This makes using it quite annoying. Acording to her, it just happened out of the blue, and wasn't caused by anything. Anyone know what i should do to fix this?

This is pretty common amoung iPhone 3G and 3GS's and is due to the supportive brackets inside the phone being made of plastic and wearing out over time. Eventually they get so weak that when you press the button the whole assembly shifts down instead of just the button.

This happened in my old iPhone 3G and I was able to get some additional life out of it by squeezing the phone right below the button to hold the assembly in place, but eventually that wouldn't even help. I had to replace the Headphone Jack Assembly which contains the power button.

I had the same problem. In my case, the button itself was defect, because there was dust between the electric contacts. I disassembled it, opened the button (removed the tape with that metal disc), cleaned it with q-tips and replaced the tape.

Works fine now ;)

How can I know, which part exactly is defect?

On my 3GS it feels like the Lock-Button has moved a little bit inside the phone and doesn't stand out as usual..

Trial and error really, if cleaning the contact point and re-assembling doesn't work then you'll be looking at replacing.
