Why is it not rinsing?

Dishwater goes through all cycles, but rinsing it does not complete leaving residue on dishes.

Many dishwashers heat the wash and/or rinse water to a higher temperature, as the cycle calls for it. In these cycles, the dishwasher pauses after it has filled with water, waiting for the water to reach the pre-set temperature. What happens next, depends, as follows:

On some units, the pause is timed and the unit continues after the allotted time.

On others, the cycle can't continue until the water reaches the higher temperature. If you have this type of dishwasher and the water isn't being heated (say, because of a problem with the heating element or thermostat), after the unit stops at the heating cycle, it never continues. When you repair the heating-system problem, the "cycle problem" is fixed too.

Also, it may indeed be rinsing, but it is common for dishwashers to leave a residue on the dishes when finished which has led to the rise of rinse aids such as JetDry. These aids keep residue from building up, and help the dishes dry faster.

In the door, usually near the detergent container, will be a cap that twists out where the rinse aid reservoir is filled. Go get some rinse aid and put it in there.

This is a pic of my dishwasher, the rinse aid reservoir is the dark grey circle. If you already know all about rinse aids and have kept up on using it, then default to mayer's answer.

I have also switched back to the brand name dish washer soap because the store brand was leaving my dishes looking dirty.

I use the detergent tabs, they're a lot easier.
