My computer won't boot, I'm getting a folder with ? on it. The bottom of the computer seems very hot.

This might be a disk failure. A specific batch of Seagate disks used in Macbooks have been known to fail. There was an Apple extension program to replace them (http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/hd/...), but it just covered the disk. Try at an Apple Store if you still haven't fixed the problem.

Your computer can't find an operating system. Try booting with your operating system disk. If successful run drive repair and see if that clears up your problem. If not you may have to reinstall your operating system. If unable to do so you probably have a bad hard drive. Ralph

I would put the install disk in and do a hard ware check. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 there are instructions for that. If the hard ware comes up fine, do a fresh install of the OS. Hint: mine had this same problem and it was the hard drive.

This indicates that some critical OS files cannot be found, or a corrupted OS or maybe even (as mayer says)a HD failure.
