Why does my disc drive no longer open?

History

I cannot get my XBOX drive open consistently. I press the eject button, and it sounds like the motor is trying to work, but the drive does not open. Very occasionally, I can get the drive to open but not with any reliability and usually after repeated attempts.

worn out guides on the drive tray. Take it apart (the drive) remove all grease and polish the guides on the tray with a dremel (or a similar device) use the polishing tip and plastic rouge. add new grease

It may depend upon the model of the optical drive. For mine it was not opening because a small rubber drive belt was slipping on its plastic pulleys. To fix this, I used a toothpick to dab a really tiny bit of honey onto the inside of the belt. (The belt is visible through the holes in the front of the drive.) Just a really tiny dab in one place was all that was necessary, since it gets onto the pulleys and then onto the rest of the belt that way. There's probably something better to use than honey, but that's what I had handy at the time. If you get too much honey on there, it can make the pulley stick too much to the belt and stretch it out or prevent the pulley from turning (I had tried this trick with a VCR belt with less success).
