Screen flickering after coffee spill

I spilled coffee on my powerbook about a year ago, at the time I didn't handle the situation appropriately. However once I finally did turn the laptop on again, the screen worked momentarily and then flickered into many horizontal lines. At this point the screens flicker deems it useless, yet the computer once plugged into an additional monitor works fine. My question is what could possibly be wrong with the computer that would leave everything functional, except for the monitor?
