Thermal paste for the heat sink

History

In reviewing your instructions for replacing the hard drive, you mention re-mounting the heat sink and the requirement for thermal paste.

I want to be sure I understand.....

Is this something I absolutely must do?

It is not 100% clear to me from the instructions.

Replacing the thermal paste is a suggestion. It is not necessary when replacing the hard drive.

but it makes sure the computers gonna keep cool

No, it makes sure that heat will get transmitted from the processor to the heat sink.
