Are you unable to insert a new disc because the metal "arm" of the optical drive is blocking the slot?

If so, try booting while holding the trackpad button.

Did this help at all?

Thanks Ben, that worked. I was all set to buy a new optical drive. You have just saved me $150. Thank you very much

philkneale,

Great! I'm so glad it worked!
