new battery and 85w charger, starts up with chime, will not boot

I own a A1260 MBP, bought it early 2008, had Apple repair it about a year ago, fans and RAM replaced. The computer just stopped working.

I now have a similar problem. Installed a new battery last week and bought an 85w power adapter hoping this would solve the problem of a non working PB. The system turns on, whirring of fans, power light on, familiar chime, get the spinning grey disk, grey status bar, then it shuts down.

Here are the things I have done: reset PRAM, "Disconnect-from-power-hold-power-button-down", and Safe-boot. Tried to start from install disk but now that is stuck in OD.

Any suggestions?
