It does sound very much like a bad laser. Remember that you have more than one laser to read the different formats.

by

well, it will still play games, DVDs and blu rays. the only thing is that this noise occurs only with games (on the fan side of the console). sadly, i do not have warranty on the device anymore..and no local shops will touch my machine. i can only assume that they a) dont know how to fix this super slim or b) they dont want to do it out of laziness or c) be held responsible for it.

Does it play games, dvd's and blu ray disks ok? Just guessing, it sounds like it could be the laser as it is moving back and forth in very jerky movements causing the noise. May be the tail-tale sign of the laser going out.

it does play dvds and blu rays without a sound. it only does this with any, even straight-from-seal videogames.

by

OK, that doesn't sound like the laser. It plays dvd's and blu ray, but with no sound.

Have you updated the system to the latest version?

by

yes..vacuumed it out too incase it was an issue with the fan and nothing

by

It is hard to diagnose over the internet, but it may be a processeor going/gone bad. No local game repair shop you can take it to?

Any chance you're still within the one year factory warranty period?

jas, if it reads one format of disk i.e. Blu Ray but not CD/Game disk, the most common fault is the laser. I believe that (if you identified your device properly) your console uses a laser lens kes-850AAA for replacement. Here is the guide for it. Hope this helps, good luck.

Not necessarily. "If" the laser is a duel-lens laser, one lens reads games and BluRay, the other lens reads DVD's. If it is a single lens laser, it will read all or none. And we've already determined it is playing BluRay and DVD, but no sound. That is not a common laser issue.

I would never suggest a specific laser without knowing the model number of the console. It would be one thing for me to order the laser, sight unseen, but I would never expect a user with no experience working on them to order one.

@Wade, good for you. I appreciate that.

well, we looked around at various guides to disassemble the unit ad clean the fan..just incase. was there anything on reassembly? theres a certain ribbon (that goes under the battery) that we just cant seem to put back together. (we're hoping the dusting did the trick)

Hi.

I see your posting is over a year old.

Just wondered, did you ever manage to sort the problem out ?

Only my superslim ps3 is doing exactly the same.

Cheers

There is nothing wrong with your system if the noise only happens with games it's just the fan, when you start a game it requires more from the system than when you play a movie. The PS4 is new and the fan sounds like a jet engine when you start playing games rather than watching movies. So there is no need to worry your PS3 will not explode

Your electronic eye or your fan might be the issue

Well I found the problem and I fixed it has to do with the microchip inside of it it needs new thermal paste I just did this to my machine and it's quiet as a mouse quite a !&&* of a process but it works if you're patience.

Sounds like your thermal paste inside the machine has dried up . The best way to do this is strip everything from your motherboard. Bake it in the oven for 5 minutes at 450 , than let the motherboard cool completely, than apply a fresh thermal paste , put back together than , everything should be quiet again

Baking a board should be a last resort. Use a hot air gun if possible. You can cause serious damage to the board baking it. Not to mention that you could melt the solder holding your pin connectors causing bad or no connections. Use hot air gun about 6 inches from the board for 30 seconds, flip the board and repeat. Do this 4-5 times. Then at about 2-3 inches from the board, concentrate the heat directly over the RSX, then the CPU for about 30 seconds to a minute. Flip the board and repeat. Do this 3-4 times. After that, keep the hot air gun on the board, about 8-10 inches away and let the temp drop. About 2 minutes. Let the board cool for 45 minutes to an hour before applying new thermal paste and reassembling it.
