Why won't my A1261 boot after I replaced the hard drive?

My A1261 MacBook Pro 17" worked great until I decided to upgrade the hard drive. I changed the hard drive only. After I put it back together, I started it and all I got was noise from the super drive no chime no display. The sleep light in front goes bright and dim. Then there is a pop noise and it turns off.

I have tried all the resets. Still same problem. I put the old hard drive back in. Same problem. The ram wasn't touched. But I tested each stick separately. Same problem. I sure wish that I had left the hard drive alone.

Any thoughts?

Thank You,

You did match (within one version) the SATA speed of the new drive to that of the old drive/bus of your machine? Serial ATA (1.5 Gb/s) fastest drive interface you can put in is a SATA ii drive 3Gb/s...

Check that the drive is fully seated in the slot. Try an SMC reset. Of course you had no power connected when you did the swap.
