Display goes black - Connection problem?

I have got a MBP 15'' late 2008 (2.4Ghz) and the problem, that sometimes after standby the display remains black (light is not turning on). I'm not sure what the problem is so I often open it and unplug the display cable with the "metal wings" after pluging it in it's powering up again. The Display itself works but the light goes off (when i shine trough the Apple Logo with a lamp I can see the Display is working but light is off). Sometimes it seems like the Display angle has something to do with it but I'm not quite sure.

Any idea whats wrong and how to fix it? Replace this cable or is it possible to tape it? (never tried that because I was afraid the glue could harm the logic board when it gets hot).

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

If you upgraded to Mavericks recently this is a reoccurring phenomena with sleep/wake issueson many units. Most solutions (there is no shure fix) say: Try not to wake the machine as (screen dims, backlight fades) the machine enters sleep, or, immediately after going to sleep (don't know what that means for sure…but slow count to 15 or 30 before touching a key or trackpad).

thx for your answer, but the problem was present before I updated to Mavericks. I used to live with this problem since 1 year, because when I unplug the cable and plug it in again it works normal. Can't say for sure why this happens but I guess it has something to do with opening and closing the lid.

Yes if the video display cable is nicked, crimped or lose as you open and close the lid you apply torque to the cable… this could intermittently ground/short/disconnect the cable. The other possibility is the LED controller is /has been acting up. One last thing… often strange application behavior can be traced back to a corrupt or damage plist file. Try making a new user account. Does the problem persist, or is it replicable in that account. If not, make note of the .plist(s) that deal with display or sleep and in you original account delete them, then restart the machine. OR move your user data only (not .plist files) to the new account.
