Try connecting your system to an external monitor, does it work then?

You can also try shining a flashlight thought the Apple logo on the lid to see if you can see the faint image of your desktop & icons (poor mans backlight), can you see it?

Do you have any background image showing? Many people have a desktop picture (I have a picture of my dogs). If you don't have one (you setup a uniform color) do you see the tinting of that color? Otherwise you'll need to plug in an external monitor so see if you see anything on it.
