How do I completely remove items to free up space?

History

I need to free up more space on my overloaded hard drive. I have used the Add/delete feature, but I still can't seem to free up more space. I know that there is another way to remove things, but I don't remember how to do it.

What OS is this computer running?

Just drag the files to the trash and empty the trash. Here's how Apple says to do it: http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/empty_tras...

Is this an external hard drive? I know when deleting files from a USB thumb drive, I've had to empty the trash before the space shows up as free.

So maybe you need to empty the trash after deleting the files (while the hard drive is connected).
