thank you both for your time and taking the trouble to help a novice techhead.will try the cleaning first and if no good the dock connector

had the same problem with my iPhone 3G.

replaced battery,dock connector...

checked charge/usb chip

(Linear Technology LTC4088-2 Battery charger/USB controller)

http://cds.linear.com/docs/Datasheet/408...

check vbus=5v

in my case I had to change the LTC4088 and another chip this position (backside/logic board)

if your ltc4088-2 chip is ok check the "position" shown the link above.

its not easy!!!but now its ok!

nice - but to be honest - most of those repairs/hacks/unlocks are nothing for the "standard user" - mostly half legal vendors in the background. i have 2 accounts there - my first one is from my old cell phone repair days in 2001 ;-)

fluid damages are always problematic - there are sometimes tiniy shorted parts on the logicboard and the dock connector.

those parts have to be cleaned carefully with a soft paintbrush and rubbing alcohol - let it dry (really dry) and if everything is clean - reassemble it and try it again

You may have to replace.....either the battery or the dock connector.
