Volume buttons not working after battery replacement, but mute does

Hello,

I just followed the instructions here to replace the battery in my iPhone 5. I had some trouble getting the battery out, but everything after that seemed to work fine. After re-assembly, the first thing I noticed is the the vibration is really strong when ringing and there was a bit of a rattle. I opened it back up and realized that I hadn't secured the plate over the screen and data cables correctly. I fixed that and closed it back up. Still really strong vibration, but now the volume + and - buttons don't work. I read another thread suggesting that the ribbon cable may have been damaged, but the mute switch still works and I believe it gets the power the same way.

Would new volume switches likely fix this issue, or is it likely that I damaged the cable? I'm not sure I'd be comfortable doing the ribbon replacement since it requires taking the logic board out.

Many thanks

Rich

Hey Rich,

Sounds to me you may have damaged it. If you need someone to do it, and you feel comfortable shipping it out, I can repair that for ya! I own a repair shop in Grand Rapids, MN. If not, I recommend ordering another replacement and trying again. I must say, it is kind of a difficult repair.

Thanks for your reply. I'm just wondering then, do you think it would not be worth ordering a volume switch replacement? I'm just confused why the mute switch would work if I damaged the cable.

Thank you again.

In the ribbon cable, you may have damaged just a small section that's only connected to the volume switch. I've done that in an iPad 2 replacement. Good luck!
