issues after hard drive replaced

I replaced a hard drive in an older 4th gen ipod, and it gives me the file with an exclamation point... itunes doesnt identify it... and it is in a boot cycle... just goes; apple logo, file/exclamation , do not disconnect, and sometimes I get an ok to disconnect... but if it doesnt give me the ok it just reboots and reboots and reboots... I can see it pop into my computer on my windows pc then instantly disapper each time... I can enter disk mode but when I plug it into my pc it starts the loop again... I need help as it is for a friend.

EnKi, of course you already double checked your work to make sure that the drive was properly connected. Place the iPod in diagnostic mode and checked to make sure that your drive is accessible. You also made sure that the drive is comparable etc. From your description, I would suspect the drive or the hard drive cable as being part of the reason why it does not work. You also want to change the battery on it as well.Checkon here for an explanation about the diagnostics mode etc. Let us know what you find. Hope this helps, good luck.

running hddscan now... we will see. it has a new battery as it was bad also. It's a new hard drive but I guess that doesn't mean it can't be bad.

ok HDD scan comes back with reg1fail what next?

Do you have a firewire connector? What computer do you use PC/Mac? This is usually caused by iPod's HD may have some bad sectors there, normally, it should able to fix by doing a Restore (not upgrade). If it still does not solve, then it is better to do a format instead (not a quick format) follow by a Restore.

by

I have access to both. but I use pc mostly. how do I do a format or a restore as it is not recognized by any computer?
