Why is my iMac 27" display showing black and flickering?

iMac screen would turn black and start to flicker and I can not see or do anything on it.

If I use Thunderbolt to HDMI cable it shows everything on my hd TV, but the iMac screen itself is just black.

Also for example: If I'm playing music and it blacks out, the music continues to play, just can't see anything.

On an external display I can work on it, don't know if it's some kind of GPU issue or the screen itself.

Are the last four figures of your serial number any one of the following:

DHJQ, DHJW, DL8Q, DNGH, DNJ9, or DMW8

DPM1, DPM2, DPNV, DNY0, DRVP, DY6F, F610

These numbers are on a recall list and Apple will pay for the repair of their faulty GPU.

Since external monitors work ok it's not the GUP/VGC the problem is with the controller, cables or actual display. I would contact Apple Support about this... there's mild chatter on the internet so this may be "know issue" and have a silent or extended warranty fix offered.
