Dropped a student's iPhone 1st gen, cracked screen, needs repair

Title says it all really, a student handed me his phone to look after and I very stupidly dropped it. It's a 1st gen iPhone, purchased in France. What can I do about getting it fixed for him? It's an old enough product now that I can't find any DIY kits for it, so I'm really looking for suggestions for where/how I could get it fixed. Thanks.

The main problem is that this phone can be bought on eBay for $40.

Here’s a 4th Gen for $23 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iPhone-4-...

Here’s how to fix it:

First of all, the original iPhone is EXTREMELY hard to repair. Second, it would cost less to buy a new one than to buy a new display assembly. Here's a link for a used one.

But, you might want to buy him a newer model because they can be cheaper and also are better.
