when optical drive connected, no boot. when disconnected, boot...
Hi
i am playing with a broken MBP. i have managed to get it to state it works. have booted up to Win Vista (dont ask) installed drivers and everything works. apart from superdrive.
when this drive is unplugged, everything works. if i plug it in and try to start it up, HDD makes clicking noise, fans try to spin and thats all signs of life i get off it. no boot at all. unplug it again and voila - boots up... now, i know, it could be broken drive, but a third in a row? (original one, one i bought off fleebay and another secondhand one). could it also be a broken ribbon cable off sdrive? i tried those drives in different computers, two of them works, one not. i am not able to work out, what could be wrong. MB? ribbon cable? or just those drives not compatible with my MBP?
thanks for any advise

I dont want to be hasty, but after a few trials and errors, I have it working.
a drive does work under windows, apart from the fact that its very picky. the problem seems to be a faulty ribbon cable. connection to MB was not made entirely, thats why. so, i have changed that ribbon and now it works.
thanks for sugestions, Ralph. i am very happy, that it didnt turn up to be faulty MB. i would be happy to throw 5 drives to the bin, then one MB. you knw, how expensive they are...:D

I would think you have a Vista driver problem--pretty common for that OS. You need to see if you can find a driver for that drive that works with Vista. Ralph

Thanks for answering your own question. I'm sure I would have stumbled upon the answer eventually, but I never suspect the cables for some reason. I was really thinking I was going to have to pull the motherboard and get out the microscope. Thanks to the Gods I can watch reality television instead tonight.;)
have just been thinking and have already tried this: even if i unplug HDD, it wont boot up...
