Screen lights up but has no picture

I dropped my MacBook and the screen went black. It lights up but there is no picture. I plugged it into an external monitor and booted it up the screen appeared but didn't have the username and password boxes. I typed in my UN and PW and it loaded my desktop picture but no Icons or dock. I tried a whole list of key commands to open apps folders and anything else. The only command that worked was the restart command. I'm thinking I may have damaged my hard drive but I still find it odd that the login boxes didn't even show. Weird. Any ideas?

Ouch !!

Sounds like you have two problems here. Clearly the display is broken or the LVDS cable is damaged. As you are able to see your desktop (granted corrupted) via an external display.

As to your other problem here, it appears the OS on your hard drive is really messed up. Lets assume the HD is OK for now and only the files are corrupted. The easiest solution is to reformat and restore your OS & files. Hopefully you have your OS DVD and a backup of your apps and data. I would also take the time to check out the HD before restoring things.

If you can recover your OS and files then you'll still need to get the display fixed. If your HD is gone then you'll need to think what will be the cheaper solution here as your getting close to buying a new system in repairs here. How banged up is your system?
