What else can I put in place of optical drive?

Now the title reads: "MacBook Core 2 Duo Optical Drive Replacement".

I just wanted to check whether another optical drive must be replaced, or whether we can replace with a standard 2.5" HDD (like the standard one in macbook) for extra storage as optical drives are practically becoming obsolete.

If so, anything else we should like out for when installing the secondary HDD?

Thanks in advance!

iFixit sells an Optical Drive Enclosure for your MacBook Core 2 Duo. This lets you add in a second hard drive in place of the optical drive. Most of us here have that and we love it!

Yes you can replace the optical drive by a second hard drive. You need to install an internal enclosure that contains the hard drive and the connection to the logic board. Here's a listing from Macsales.

or a SSD unit

This does not include mounting hardware & cable. Just received my enclosure. Perfect fit, but useless, as there's no way to hook it up. I guess they assume I'm removing an existing optical drive, and I'd have the mounting kit & cable. That's been removed from this machine a long time ago. Apparently ifixit doesn't supply those.

Did you take your optical drive out and not save the parts? The cable is available as a spare and you might find the screws from someone as well.
