Compatible Graphic Cards to upgrate

Hi,

I have a mac pro (2009) and I want to upgrade my graphics card mostly for gaming purposes.

I did some research online and I could only find outdated cards that were in the configuration options for this mac back in 2009.

If I buy one of the new cards, will they work on my mac? I saw for example the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition running on a 2012 mac pro but I don't know if it is supported on mine.

cheers

Asked a friend who's knowledgable in the subject (Mac Pro owner, Hackintosh enthusiast), here's what he had to say:

"Yes, you'll be able to run the 7950 Mac Edition. (There is no 7970 for OS X, unfortunately). It's just not officially supported.

"Also, according to BareFeats (http://www.barefeats.com/gpu7950.html) you'll need either Lion or Mountain Lion, and if you're running 10.7.5 or 10.8.2 you'll also need a special driver that comes on a disc. 10.8.3 does not need a special driver."

The vendor and the manufacture of the card should be able to answer that question. Go to the manufactures support site and see if they have drivers for MacPro. This http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/video/ can give you some starting information.
