Macbook (Not Charging) MagSafe Board + Battery Connector replaced

History

My macbook displays the (Not Charging) when plugged in.

The battery is fine, it holds a charge and can be charged inside other Macbooks. The powercord is fine, it charges other Macbooks and keeps my own running. And the mac can run off the battery as well. It just will not charge up.

I've replaced both the Magsafe DC-In board

and the battery connector with no new results.

Is this now a Logic Board issue or do I have other options? Can a Logic Board be fixed?

For those who are asking for an update: Sorry guys, I never found a solution. I sold the laptop with a full explanation to the next guy. Luckily Macs resell well.

Eric,

Just wondering if original poster found a solution to his problem? Mine current situation is exactly as his was a few years ago. Battery can charge in another macbook but not in mine. Power cord works in mine and other computers, but light doesn't go on in my computer as it does in others. Power cord won't charge battery in my computer but will in others. Battery icon is reading correctly. Other power cables do not charge the battery in my computer. A leaking roof got my computer a little bit wet, besides slight water behind screen that is drying up on its own, the only other concern is this battery issue. Any suggestions on a simple solution to fix it? Right now I'm thinking to try and buy an external battery charger. What else can I do? Thanks, Joan PS resetting the SMC did not work. I have no idea how to restart the computer from an external.

joniscan,

I have the same issue - 17" A1297 Macbook Pro - Will not charge the battery (magsafe doesnt go orange) but the internal battery will charge within another laptop and i have a second magsafe charger that does the same...and tried someone elses working magsafe so that rules that out. The Laptop had severe water damage so to get it this far was miraculous! I have read the logic board has a special charge circuit and a couple of surface mount fuses that can go open circuit.... there is info on this on the net if you are into electronics on a surface mount level! Some battery level is needed as it doesnt have a seperate PRAM battery so it relies on a charged main battery...so it would be nice to have a charging battery! I dont need it portable but will have a closer look at the circuit and post up what i find. If it isnt the onboard fuses then it may be the IC's in the charging circuit...something i may not bother with! :(

Simon,

same problem. no x though its recognized. its says not charging. i did all resets and what not i bought the two parts i hope it fixes it.

dfgadf asfgas,

This is a problem with the late 2008 alu MB. It has to be a design issue. I have read so many posts about this problem and they are nearly all coming from this model. This should be a guarantee repair as it is apparently connected to some design mistake or bad parts. Have someone been in contact with apple?

Just a few suggestions for further troubleshooting steps (in the desperate hope that it's not a logic board issue):

First, have you tried resetting the SMC? Directions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

Second, to eliminate the possibility of software issues, have you tried restarting the computer from an external hard drive to see if the issue persists?

Finally, I know you've tried your current power cable on other computers, but have you tried a different power cable on the problem computer?

Resetting the SMC did not work, neither the power cable. I have not yet tried restarting the computer from an external.

I've had the same problem with my MB, it won't charge the battery itself but it will work with an already charged battery. I bought an external battery charger on eBay for $30. And it works well however I have no warning before the battery runs out of juice.

I just had the exact same thing happen to my 2008 MacBook.

Tried all the usual suspects, PRAM zap, SMC reset, swapping good batteries and power cables. the MB just doesn't recognize the battery in the Sys Profiler. There was some intermittent recognizing of the battery (after a SMC reset), but even in that case, showed a completely full battery as 0% and wasn't charging it, then it was back to the X over the battery.

I was contemplating replacing the magsafe board, but methinks it might be the logic board.

my MB got just slightly wet, however, there were no signs of any water entering the ports, AND, it's gotten wet before to no bad ends.

I am going to take the topcase off and inspect the LB. I had read a thread about cleaning the LB:

Which could be a whole lot of fun.

I had the same problem as the first poster. 2007 Core2Duo Macbook worked fine on AC and from charged battery, but did not charge the battery. The same battery, charged in another Macbook, worked and lasted for 4 hours. The problematic Macbook still recognized the battery, with System Profiler showing the full charge capacity (4500 mAh), percentage remaining, and charge cycles. Even though it cannot charge the battery, it still shows the full charge capacity even when the battery is fully drained.

Just had a very big problem with the battery. I had charged it in another Macbook, and was using it in the problematic Macbook. It lasted for about 4 hours before being fully drained. I was out of town and at that point I used the Macbook plugged into AC.

When I got home, I went to charge the drained battery in another Macbook, but to my surprise I found that the battery was completely dead. Would not charge and showed 0 full charge capacity. Power cords check out fine. The 2nd Macbook is able to charge its own battery just fine.

Do you think there is any connection between the non-charging problem and killing the battery? It was an excellent battery, with high full charge capacity and lasted for 4 hours. From one day to the next, it just died.

P.S. I have seen external battery chargers on eBay, but do not know how well they work. You take your battery out of the Macbook (or Powerbook) and charge it outside the computer. The AC cord plugs into the wall and has a connector that mirrors the layout of the battery connector on the battery (the part that goes into the battery connector in the battery bay).

I too thought of changing the Battery Connector, but had hoped to hear some positive feedback on this before doing so.

I've had the same problem too! I have a 2008 13" macbook aluminum unibody. I have just been running my computer off AC for a while now, but it super frustrating when it just barely becomes unplugged and dies. Is there any final word on if this is a logic board failure or not? Because I can afford to replace the Magsafe board, but I can't afford a full logic board replacement.

I cleaned the magnetic part on my computer real well, but the light was still only dim green and no charge. Then I got a bit nasty and started jiggling the magsafe connector into the space until finally I got a good connection, the light went bright green for a moment and then orange.

But now I'm afraid to remove the magsafe power cord from the computer...
