Looking for a hard drive enclosure for the MacBook Air!

I have a serial ATA hard drive leftover from a MacBook Air that had water damage. I'm trying to locate an enclosure that's compatible with it so that I can retrieve data! I have already tried purchasing a case for a 1.8" hard drive only to find out that it is incompatible. Do you sell one that will work? Please help! Thanks!

Hi all,

found this page while looking for advice myself on this same issue. I had an SSD I'd bought from OWC but then my (2009) MBA logic board got nuked so was looking for an external enclosure.

I called StarTech and asked (their very helpful tech guy) which product would work. Not only did they recommend the right drive (that works!) but also pointed out if you buy on Amazon it's cheaper and delivery is faster than direct through them.

Here is a enclose I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003V4T... the StarTech product number is SAT1810U2.

Hope this helps.

Yikes! I looked at the enclosure on Amazon and it's priced at over $400! Are there any other options? What the !&&*!???

Mayer,

Yes. I appreciated the links. Unfortunately, the Cubeternet enclosure does not work, the ZIF connector is too thick.

That is the enclosure I bought through Amazon and tried. I subsequently went to an Apple authorized repar tech with over 30 years experience, and asked him if he had an enclosure and he pulled out the same one and said he couldn't make it work either.

I had an online chat last night with the StarTech technical representatives and they say the enclosure will work with the HD.

So I guess I'll order the StarTech enclosure and cross my fingers.

Phillip,

Did you ever find a HD enclosure that works? I have a failing Samsung HD from a Macbook Air A1237 for which I've bought one enclosure that didn't work from Amazon.

After I replaced the HD in the Macbook Air, I found my 14 year old daughter had been writing a novel for two years on the Air and she was heartbroken I didn't try any data recovery.

I'm loath to open back up the Air to put the drive back in and try to boot from an USB drive to recover the file. I felt fortunate just to replace the HD successfully.

Please let me know.

Did you even bother to look at the three links I gave on this question?

Did the StarTech one work in the end?

Thanks,

Hello all:

I had the same experience JIm did. Have not ordered the StarTech enclosure yet, either. But I'd like to know if it works or not. It's very hit or miss. Even the Genius Bar's representatives could not locate me a third-party enclosure that works (they did try, and try their best; so did I)

I was just about to go to eBay to locate an old MacBook Air to swap hard drives with, too.

Cheers -
